I first read about this place on the GFRAP site. A GF Fish & Chips place right in my home town of Portland, Oregon? Whooo Hooo! Recently, I was able to go and check it out. I was surprised to find it in my old neighborhood! They opened in 2002 after I had already transplanted myself in NYC. It’s a pretty cute place with pub style, including nautical décor and a great mural of their guest's fishing photos.

Owners Greg and Dana gave us the lowdown on how their “Wisconsin tavern meets Northwest fishhouse” ended up GF. Wanting to replicate the Green Bay, WI fish fry taste, they discovered that rice flour batter was the ideal coating. Shortly after opening, a knowing patron told Greg and Dana how they might be on to something with the GF fish n' chips thing. So they decided to go GF all the way (except for sandwich bread) and had someone come in to explain the evils of gluten, how not to cross-contaminate, and to make GF notations on their menu.

My gluten eating family was just as happy as I was with the tastiness of the food. Corbett Fish House claims to be the only restaurant on the west coast to have Walleye (the largest fish in the Perch family) and Lake Perch (baby cousin of Walleye). We had a sampler plate of everything and my brother’s favorite was the Chile Fried Catfish and my favorite was the Willapa Bay oysters! For those of you who can tolerate dairy, the Wisconsin style deep fried cheese curds are supposedly amazing. I found out the tartar sauce and cocktail sauce do contain corn syrup, but they are working on corn-free versions for my visit in June! If you have a sweet tooth they always have three kinds of GF cheesecake and/or ice cream for dessert. I've gotta say that since Corbett Fish House arrived, Portland is one extra cool town!

*Special thanks to our waiters Keith and Mike who were so informative, friendly and funny!

My brother ended up knowing one of the fisherman in these photos!
Bring in a photo of your fish catch and get a free glass of beer or wine ... sometimes they have cider.
